چکیده

Conjecture exists over the degree that arboreal frugivorous foraging is used by Varanus olivaceus. Here I present evidence from still camera traps, video camera traps, direct observations and spool and line tracking that indicate these monitor lizards take fruit directly from trees, rather than feeding exclusively on fallen fruit as suggested previously.

Dragon surprise

There are now so few areas of natural environment in the world that have not been subject to biological survey or disturbance so the discovery of new species in recent expeditions to some of these regions has been proving remarkable, although large 'new' vertebrates are now increasingly rare. However, a recent analysis of material collected from lizard specimens in the northern Philippines has ...

A spectacular new Philippine monitor lizard reveals a hidden biogeographic boundary and a novel flagship species for conservation.

As humans continue to explore the last uncharted regions of the planet, discoveries of previously unknown species of large vertebrates have become infrequent. Here, we report on the discovery of a spectacular new species of giant, secretive, frugivorous, forest monitor lizard (Genus: Varanus) from the forests of the northern Philippines. Using data from morphology and mitochondrial and nuclear ...

Morphology, Activity Area, and Movement Patterns of the Frugivorous Monitor Lizard Varanus bitatawa

—The newly described Varanus bitatawa is a large, frugivorous, monitor lizard endemic to the northern Sierra Madre mountain range in Luzon, Philippines. This study presents the first description of its ecology from tracking and camera trapping. We captured five adult lizards weighing 1.0–5.1 kg with snout-vent lengths (SVL) from 40–66 cm and total lengths from 100–164 cm. Activity areas were no...

Dragons in our midst : Phyloforensics of illegally traded Southeast Asian monitor lizards

We provide a phylogenetic and population genetic evaluation of the illegal pet and bush meat trade of monitor lizards in the Philippines. We use a molecular dataset assembled from vouchered samples with known localities throughout the country, as a reference for statistical phylogenetic, population genetic, and DNA barcoding analyses of genetic material obtained during a three year survey of th...

A new blue-tailed Monitor lizard (Reptilia, Squamata, Varanus) of the Varanus indicus group from Mussau Island, Papua New Guinea

We describe a new species of Varanus from Mussau Island, north-east of New Guinea. The new species is a member of the Varanus indicus species group and is distinguished from all other members by both morphological and molecular genetic characters. It is the third species of Varanus reported from the Bismarck Archipelago and the first record of a yellow tongued member of the Varanus indicus spec...
